Heartworm, Flea, and Tick Prevention

Heartworm, Flea, and Tick Prevention

heartworm prevention

As a conscientious and dedicated pet owner, you will, of course, be committed to making sure that your precious furbaby is fully protected from the many different diseases that can potentially put their health at risk. While there are lots of different ones to consider, some can be vaccinated against on an annual or bi-annual basis, while others require monthly preventatives. Of these, there are three parasites that need to be at the top of your list to protect your pet from. These are heartworms, fleas, and ticks.

Heartworms: are an internal parasite that live inside your pet’s heart, lungs and associated blood vessels. Although transmitted by mosquitos, instances of heartworms have been reported in all states and so country-wide protection is recommended for all cats and dogs. Left untreated, heartworms are nearly always fatal.

Fleas: are probably the most well-known of all parasite problems. These wingless creatures can jump incredible heights and distances and can survive virtually anywhere, making it easy for your pet to contract them. They also reproduce rapidly and are very hard to get rid of. As well as draining your pet’s blood and irritating his skin, fleas can also carry diseases such as tapeworms.

Ticks: are another external parasite although they are more prevalent in some areas than others. Ticks attach themselves to your pet when he brushes past and will drink his blood for around 72 hours before dropping off. This makes them possible to spot. Unfortunately, ticks are well-known for carrying a range of debilitating diseases including Lyme Disease.

The good news is that there are a range of preventatives that can keep your pet safe from heartworms, fleas, ticks and more. It is important to note that heartworm medication can only be prescribed by a licensed veterinarian. Here at Snodgrass Veterinary Medical Center, we recommend Sentinel Spectrum products. We also offer a complimentary 1-month dose of Bravecto with each purchase of Sentinel Spectrum preventatives.
